Heat Wave Dressing

I’m back today with another simple outfit. It’s so dang hot that I can’t even think about layers right now, so I’m breaking out this lightweight dress that will keep me from completely melting. I’m not sure why Kansas City decided to skip straight to August weather, but whatever the reason, I’m not a fan.

Dress: Target (similar); necklace: Dean Harris for Target; sandals: Old Navy (similar)

Yesterday we went to take pictures at this cute little cottage-turned office building near our house. It’s currently vacant and starting to look a little bedraggled, but I imagine with some upkeep it would be adorable. In my disposable-income dreams I’d open up a little clothing boutique there.

Despite the heat, I plan to make the most of my weekend by enjoying the things that are best in this scorching weather: ice cream, white wine, and Frappuccinos (surprise, surprise, they’re all food and drink related).

Is it hot where you live? How do you beat the heat?

Simple Summer Pastels

This is one of those outfits I hesitated to post due to its simplicity. Pastel jeans, a ruffled blouse, and sandals: there’s not a lot to it. Then I realized that although it’s simple, I do really like it. In the summer heat, simplicity is sometimes best.

Blouse: Loft; jeans: Loft; sandals: Steve Madden via 6pm.com; necklace: Jess LC; wrinkles: I'm blaming the cute baby (my niece Addie) I was holding all afternoon, they were well worth it!

Do you tend to wear simpler outfits in the summer?

Dinner Tonight: Indian Spiced Roasted Chicken

I just saw a preview for Magic Mike, and now I’m trying to write a blog post. I’m having a little trouble concentrating. Chicken. Yes, let’s talk about chicken. This Indian Spiced Roasted Chicken from Recipe.com is spicy, delicious, and mouth-wateringly delicious. (And yes, I am talking about the chicken.)

The recipe called for thighs and drumsticks, but as I’ve mentioned, I prefer white meat so I used chicken breasts instead. (I have so many jokes right now… ) To accompany this juicy piece of meat (last one, I swear) I made curry-seasoned rice.

So do me a favor and make this chicken. I’ll do you a favor and see the movie so I don’t have to write anymore awkward blog posts. Deal?

Summer Colors and Stripes

What a memorable weekend! My best friend Abby (the one I had the shower for) had her baby Addie on Friday, and she is simply precious. Abby is like a sister to me, so being there that day and meeting Addie for the first time was surreal. I burst into tears when I saw them; I couldn’t help myself.

T-shirt: Old Navy (similar); skirt: Merona (currently available in plum and lime), Target; scarf: gifted Old Navy; belt: Loft; sandals: New York & Co

That was definitely the highlight, but I can’t complain about the rest of the weekend either. We went to a barbeque festival (which sounds like more fun than it was, unfortunately), had my dad, step-mom and little sister over for lunch, and spent a little more time with sweet Addie and her parents.

Outfit inspiration: I saw this look at Mae Badiyan which was inspired by a look from Boden that I pinned a while ago and loved her recreation of it.

Did you have a good weekend? What did you do?

Color Blocking in Brights

I feel like the alternate title to this post could be “How to Dress Like a Popsicle”. Or maybe a bowl of sherbet. (By the way, who else says sherbert? I always thought that’s what it was!)

T-shirt: Target; skirt: Old Navy; necklace: c/o Swell Caroline; belt: Old Navy; sandals: Steve Madden via 6pm.com

I’m joining the Color Block party at Long Distance Loving today for Friday’s Fancies. For inspiration, I turned to two of my favorite bloggers for color-blocking expertise: this look from J’s Everyday Fashion and this one from Mix and Match Fashion. Both of these stylish gals always impress me with their mad color-blocking skills!

I remember when this trend emerged, and I was nervous about wearing so many bold, bright colors together. Now, I love trying new and unexpected color combinations. The bolder, the better!

Are you embracing the color-blocking trend?

My Favorite Versatile Dress

Today’s the last day to enter my Shabby Apple giveaway!

Warning: you will probably be seeing a lot of this dress on the blog. I think it is my favorite purchase of the birthday money spending extravaganza (although allow me to change my mind when I put on my white blazer). It is so easy to wear, and I love how its look changes completely depending on the accessories I add to it.

Jean jacket: Gap (old); dress (now on sale!): Land's End Canvas; locket necklace: boutique in Boulder, CO; leaf necklace: Dean Harris for Target; belt: Old Navy; sneakers: Converse

With a jean jacket, Chuck Taylors and a bright belt, this dress does casual with the best of them. (I show off its slightly dressier side with wedges and pearls here.)

Well, the dress and I are off to go enjoy the longest day of the year!

Do you have a favorite recent purchase? What is it?

Dinner Tonight: Spicy Saté Noodles

There’s still time to enter my Shabby Apple giveaway!

Since we always have more free time in the summer, Aaron and I have a hard time eating dinner at home. During the school year, we’re so exhausted by the end of the day that it seems easier to cook (or at least scrounge through the fridge) than go anywhere. Now we have to fight the urge to eat out all the time.

Since our wallets don’t like restaurants nearly as much as we do, it’s nice to have easy, yet flavorful dishes to make at home. I love these Spicy Saté Noodles from Rachael Ray’s Book of 10 cookbook (printable here). They’re the perfect combination of saté sauce and ginger noodles, and are just as (if not more) delicious as your favorite takeout joint.

Do you go out to eat more in the summer?

Deja Vu: Colored Shorts Two Ways

Don’t forget to enter my Shabby Apple giveaway!

I hope you all had a great Father’s Day weekend! I didn’t get to spend it with my dad, but I hope to make that up to him next weekend by cooking him a nice meal.

Today I’m doing another “Déjà Vu” post, and I’m styling a pair of colored shorts two ways. I bought these shorts from Old Navy last summer, and with colored pants and shorts being such a big trend right now, they’re getting lots of wear. I dressed them up a little for a dinner date, and I also styled them casually for day.

Blazer: Madewell; t-shirt: Loft; shorts: Old Navy (similar); earrings and long necklace: Target; sandals: Target

My favorite way to dress up shorts for a date (I did it here too) is to add heels and a blazer, as well as some bold jewelry. Excluding the shorts, all the pieces are neutrals, so the result is a simple, chic look.

This look was inspired by this photo of Aubrey Plaza, and I'm linking up to Inspiration Monday at Two Birds today.

Top: Gap; shorts: Old Navy (similar); earrings: Target; sandals: Steve Madden via 6pm.com

For day, I went bolder with the colors, but I kept my accessories to a minimum. I love how this mix of eggplant and coral turned out!

How are you wearing your colored shorts this summer?

Effortless Summer Style with a Dress

Don’t forget to enter my Shabby Apple giveaway!

Happy Friday! Pat yourself on the back for making it through another week. I’m patting myself on the back for finally finishing my resume and getting a few job applications out. Imagining a future career is fun; actually searching and applying for jobs is the anti-fun.

Chambray shirt: Madewell; dress: Forever 21; belt: Loft; earrings: Bauble Bar (similar); sandals: Mia

This outfit is exactly the kind of thing I can wear all summer long. Throwing on a dress is so easy, and adding a button down shirt (my favorite chambray) over it requires equally little effort. When I add a belt and some platform sandals, I daresay I might even look polished.

This week I’m linking up once again to Long Distance Loving for an Outfit Crush themed Friday’s Fancies. My outfit crush (which inspired this outfit) is this look from Keiko Lynn. I love her feminine style, and I’m constantly trying out her awesome makeup tutorials.

Whose style have you been crushing on lately?

Dinner Tonight: Turkey Fried Rice

Don’t forget to enter my Shabby Apple giveaway!

This scrumptious Turkey Fried Rice (printable here) makes a healthy weeknight meal that is a definite crowd-pleaser. I wanted to share it with you, but I also wanted to talk a little bit about the “gastronomique” portion of this blog.

When telling people about my blog, I can easily categorize the fashion aspect: this is definitely a personal style blog. However, I hesitate to also call myself a food blogger. I read several food blogs religiously, and I can’t seem to put myself in the same category.

My focus is predominantly fashion, but I enjoy doing food posts weekly mainly because I like to cook. Mind you, I’m no chef; I’d put myself in the “home cook” category. I like finding recipes that are quick and easy to make and don’t require a million ingredients. I hope that every once in a while you find something that sounds good to you, or at the very least feel inspired to get in the kitchen more.

I also like to know what you’re cooking; I’m always looking for new ideas. Have you made anything yummy lately?

Embracing the Neon Trend

If you can’t tell, I’ve jumped on board the neon train fully and completely. I can’t seem to get enough: what started out as an innocent trial (bright pink shoes, chartreuse belt) has become a full-on obsession (how many times have you seen this cardigan lately?).

Cardigan: Loft (similar); Dress: Forever 21; belt: Old Navy; sandals: BC Footwear

However, I’m not going to apologize. Instead, I’m embracing my love for all things neon by linking up to Everybody Everywear for Neon day. I’m sure I’ll find even more ways to love all things fluorescent.

Check out this awesome necklace (in black or tangerine) from Swell Caroline I got when I went to #BlogBizBuzz Kansas City, hosted by Meg Biram of Mimi and Meg.

Clearly, I’m having a thing for neon right now. What’s your favorite trend of the moment?

Nautical Stripes and Neon Pink

I had a pedicure for the first time in six years this weekend. Before you panic over the state of my feet, let me be clear that I give myself pedicures at home regularly. But going to a professional seems like such a luxury to me that I never can justify doing it.

Dress: Land's End Canvas; pearls: Loft Outlet; belt: Old Navy (in green); sandals: Old Navy

However, my best friend is due any day now, and painting her own toes isn’t in the realm of possibilities. So I forced myself to join her, and now I think I may have started an addiction. When the lady put a hot towel on my legs (heavenly!) I started to think about ways to convince Aaron that a monthly pedicure is a must-have in our budget.

I saw this dress on one of my new favorite blogs, In Residence, and I knew I had to have it!

I didn’t plan it that way, but my pink toenails perfectly coordinate with my outfit too. I love how neon pink looks with my new (purchased in May, so I still haven't shopped this month!) striped dress.

Do you treat yourself to pedicures and manicures often?
